What actually determines the intelligence?

If all of us have the same number of neurons, then what is that makes a few people more intelligent, more successful than others? What makes one student smarter than the other?

What actually determines the intelligence and success of a person is the number of NEURO CONNECTIONS that happen in the brain.  The more and more that neurons get interconnected with one another, the more intelligent, analytical, creative and communicative one becomes.

So, the question is, 'Is it possible to trigger these neuro connections to form specific patterns?'

The answer is "YES"  The type and number of neuro connections that happen in a human brain depends upon the external stimuli given to the brain.  We need to activate the correct parts of the brain to achieve specific results.

It is true that by stimulating the brain, more neuro connections can be made to happen, then it is equally true that there is no limit to the level of intelligence that one can reach.

Research shows that in the lifetime of a human being, the best age to nurture such a holistic development by activating and stimulating the brain is the first few months after birth, then the first 3-4 months and in an extended manner, the first fourteen years.  In fact, it is today a well-known fact that a major portion of a child's brain development (IQ & EQ) takes place during the first 3-4.  The brain has an infinite capacity to absorb things during this period.

#MySmartBaby is a program designed to help you begin to understand the functioning of the human brain, its amazing capabilities and most importantly, what you, as a mother can do to activate the genius within your child.

IAHP (The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential)

Brain-Friendly Teaching: Putting Brain-Friendly Strategies To Work - Marilee Sprenger

"Teachers who are new to brain-compatible teaching are often in awe of how the brain remembers, and of how many different memory systems there are," explains BrainLady" Marilee Sprenger. "Although many brain-compatible principles are followed instinctively, once teachers know why and how the principles work, they are much more likely to use those principles again."

Often, discarding techniques that don't work is as important to improving teaching and retention as adopting those that do work. Neuroscience expert and BrainLady Marilee Sprenger tells Education World that if teachers keep in mind that students have a limited focus time, they can chunk their lessons into purposeful time slots.

"Focus time is generally said to be the students' age in minutes. For example, rather than teaching twelve year olds by lecturing for twenty minutes, lecture for ten or fewer minutes and then have students discuss the material with one another in a think-pair-share arrangement," suggests Sprenger. "Lecture is effective, but we must give up the lengthy speeches with too many points covered. Retention is low unless students are using graphic organizers or guiding questions to take notes. The time limits still must be adhered to."

Similarly, assigning whole chapters to read without specific guidance as to what to look for also will result in low memory. The more actively students are involved in their learning, the more likely they are to remember it. Sprenger reports that the most effective strategy for retention appears to be teaching others.

"Rote rehearsal needs to be replaced with elaborative rehearsal," she advises. "Instead of memorizing lists, students can use some of the mnemonic devices, such as Peg Systems, to help them visualize and remember."

BRAIN-FRIENDLY STRATEGIES AT WORK

In practical terms, brain-friendly learning works at different levels through varying strategies. With the goal of having students truly master and remember the material, an elementary grade teacher might tackle the common assignment of a weekly spelling list through mnemonic devices (memory strategies), which are brain-compatible ways of storing information.

"Some of those involve thoughts and many include actions as well," Sprenger shares. "Singing spelling words has been effective for many students, and tunes such as Row, Row, Row Your Boat often are used."

Pairing students with one as the "writer" and another as the "paper" is a different technique that improves memory. The first student writes the spelling word on the back of his partner by using his finger as the writing utensil. The "paper" partner must visualize the word in order to pronounce it. For kinesthetic learners, Sprenger suggests an alternate activity that makes us of a "hopscotch" board with enough letters for students to hop to each letter of the spelling word.

"My favorite strategy for teaching literary terms for older students is to use a mind map," says Sprenger. "This is a web of sorts. In the center of a piece of paper, the student writes Literary Terms and puts a cloud around it. This is all done in one color. Then, using another colored marker or colored pencil, a line is drawn and the literary term such as simile is written on the line. Below the line, the student creates a picture or icon representing the definition. Perhaps she draws two stick figures, puts an arrow between the two, and writes like or as above the arrow. My students loved making the maps and got very creative with their pictures. Visualization is an important component of memory and students visualized their maps and pictures to access their terms and definitions."

AVOIDING "SENIOR MOMENTS"

Knowing what she does about the brain, how it learns, and how it functions, Sprenger recognizes that every person can take better care of his or her brain to improve memory. That includes getting enough sleep, which means eight hours for adults. Eating right and including Omega 3 fats in the diet help too, as does lowering stress through exercise, meditation, or making life changes.

"Write things down," advises Sprenger. "Often we forget because we are using our memory spaces with information that we can take off of our minds by jotting it down. That frees working memory space and makes it easier to remember what we have completed, where we have put things, and what we need to remember or do next."

What other things can teachers do to stay on top of their own memory challenges and avoid the stereotypical senior moments," especially in the classroom? Simply spending time with interesting people keeps the mind young. Reading the newspaper, discussing what is going on in the world, and social contact are all positive experiences for the brain.

"It is vital as we age that we keep our brains challenged and busy," Sprenger states. "Playing bridge, chess, and other intellectual games is helpful. Learning new skills such as playing musical instruments is a wonderful way to challenge your brain and keep it making connections. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and reading also are helpful."

My Smart Baby Program & Multiple Intelligence

“Intelligence is the capacity to do something useful in the society in which we live.  Intelligence is the ability to respond successfully to new situations and the capacity to learn from one’s past experience.” - Dr. Howard Gardner

Dr. Howard Gardner, a professor of cognition and education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, developed his theory of multiple intelligence twenty years ago.  Dr. Gardner says that people employ several different types of intelligence, rather than one general type.

According to Dr. Gardner there are 8 types of intelligence.

Every child born is inherent with one or more dominant intelligence.  By activating and stimulating the dominant intelligence the child can be made to excel and perform very well in school and later in career.  Even those intelligences that are not by nature dominant in the child can be nurtured systematically using certain activities.

These activities are well researched and scientifically proven.  Each activity is designed and created so as to stimulate and nurture the Eight different multiple intelligence.

While our “My Smart Baby” kit consisting of the “chips of knowledge” aims to stimulate the right brain’s hidden capabilities, especially the “photographic memory”, the MI activities are aimed at enriching the left brain as well.  This makes the “My Smart Baby” a holistic program for infants & toddlers aimed at nurturing the capabilities of both the left and the right brain.

Language Mastery & Right Brain

It is generally thought that words are learnt through the left brain.  But in reality there is both left brain verbal learning and right brain verbal learning.  Learning a language becomes far easier and perfect when the left and the right brain learning interlock.  While a second language is taught to a child in school the left brain learning methods are used.  On the other hand children much younger (between 0 to 3 years of age) use predominantly right brain learning and they are able to learn and have a good command of their mother tongue within these three years itself.

Infants don’t understand the meaning at first but absorb large quantities of words into the right brain.  Parallely the left brain links words to images in the right brain and comprehends and records these.  Thus the right-left brain interlocking happens.

After six years of age, the left brain functions more predominantly and it suppresses the effective functioning of the right brain, thereby learning using both hemispheres of the brain becomes difficult.

The left brain learning method is as stated earlier to process from parts to the whole and is a successive and sequential building-up process:  it learns consciously and is a method requiring comprehension and memorization. The left brain has an ability to manage what it has learnt using the prepositional learning method.

In contrast, the right brain does not require comprehension and memorization: the absorption of information is done unconsciously and in great quantities and the right brain uses its appositional methods to manage incoming data and information in a holistic manner.  If appositional method is included in the process of language learning, language mastery becomes a cakewalk.

“The First 2,000 Days are Critical” by Irene Sege

“The first 2,000 days are critical.” These words form the underlying message of a fascinating segment on NBC’s Education Nation about the science of early brain development, complete with state-of-the-art, non-invasive brain imaging from scientists at the University of Washington. Take a look at this video for some compelling images of brain development and the brain at work.
“If the United States is serious about the commitment of making transformational change in the K-12 educational system, we will have to take seriously the images you see today because it shows you what happens before children get to school,” said Dr. Patricia Kuhl, co-director of the University of Washington Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences. “The first 2,000 days are critical.”
Humans are born with 100 billion neurons in their brains, Dr. Kuhl noted, but the wiring connecting them is not in place. In the first six years of life, she said, the child’s brain rapidly lays down these synapses. It grows white matter to cover neural axons, she said, showing images of white matter occupying one-third of the brain of a 9-month-old and two-thirds of the brain of a 5-year-old. She showed images of the fiber tracks, the “super highways” that allow one area of the brain to communicate with another.
“The child’s brain’s architecture is grown as children …manipulate the world to see how it works, as they interact with loving parents, as they negotiate the social world with each other, as they create playful and imagined worlds that live in their heads,” Dr. Kuhl said. “These kinds of activities — listening to language and interacting with people – are creating the white matter tracks and the speedy processing in the brain that leads to thought and creative ideas. The child’s brain in the first 2,000 days is waiting for this activity. If this activity doesn’t occur the brain doesn’t work its magic in the way that it does under normal circumstances.”
Perhaps most fascinating were the images from a magnetoencephalography (MEG) machine showing brain activity as a baby positioned under a helmet that Dr. Kuhl likens to a “hairdryer from Mars” hears words. MEG shows the listening area of her brain light up. It shows the social area of her brain light up.
“She hasn’t produced a single word but she’s getting ready to talk back. She knows she’s in a social situation and she wants to go,” Dr. Kuhl said. “These appear to be biomarkers for future development. Children who show lots of activity to words and sentences early can be shown to learn words more rapidly at the age of 3, and their reading readiness is better at the age of 5.”
“There are only 2,000 days between the newborn baby and when that child will show up in kindergarten,” added the institute’s co-director, Dr. Andrew Meltzoff. “It is urgent that we use the best scientific information to make sure we support all our children so they can succeed in school. Our children can’t wait.”

Sing them a song: Doctors study potential of music on foetuses - TOI

CHENNAI: Every time one-year-old Rohan John heard someone humming the song 'Rock of Ages', he would stop whatever he was doing and tilt his head. His mother had sung it every time she felt him restless inside her as a foetus. "The song calmed him and he still seems to recognise the tune when someone croons it," said his mother Sarah.

Most mothers talk and sing to their unborn babies and swear they can feel a response. With ultrasound studies proving that foetus in the womb indeed respond to music, a group of specialists in the city are now exploring the scope of music in enhancing radiology and imaging technology. Doctors say babies respond to sound, especially during the last four months of pregnancy.

"Foetuses start responding to external stimuli by the 18th week and reach auditory maturity by the 24th. Using this as basis, we decided to introduce music to stimulate foetuses and study their movement," said Dr S Suresh, director, Mediscans, Chennai. He was addressing a gathering of scientists, doctors, radiologists, musicians, engineers and music lovers who came together to promote innovative ideas in the application of music and sounds in radiology and imaging.

A team of doctors from Narayan Medical College and Hospital, Nellore, who were present at the conference, came up with a preliminary study to show the potential of music in studying foetuses. Around 30 pregnant women from a village near Nellore were chosen as subjects. "We came up with a device that produces sound at different frequencies and we found the impact on the infants. Our sonogram clearly picked up signs of movement. There were also changes in the heart rate," said Dr M F Davis, who was part of the research team. He, however, said it is still too early to arrive at any conclusion.

The team, in consultation with musicians, also compiled a CD with music for the foetus. "We included two tracks — Indian classical music and natural sounds like that of the rain, wind, waves and birds," said music director Alphons Joseph. He said the classical music was based on three ragas - Sankarabharanam and Mohanam, which are lively, and Neelambari, which is more of a lullaby. "Most of it is instrumental and we've infused western harmony too. We had to ensure the music wasn't too loud or jarring so as to hurt the baby," said Alphons. Researchers said in some ultrasounds, they saw the fetuses move their head and hands in response to the stimuli. "But the study is still at a preliminary stage. We will have to study at least a minimum of 100 women before we can say anything conclusive," said Dr K N Maruthy, who was part of the team who came up with the apparatus.

Doctors are also studying if listening to music helps pregnant women de-stress, another popular myth, and if it actually helps develop the auditory system of the foetus.
